Insurance premiums have increased dramatically in recent years but still vary widely among different car models. Some cost nearly twice as much to insure as others.

    More On Car Insurance

That’s why it’s more important than ever to take a vehicle’s cost to insure into account, along with factors such as purchase price, maintenance costs, and fuel economy.

To find vehicles that don’t cost an arm and a leg to insure, Consumer Reports used data from comparison shopping website Insurify, which analyzed over 90 million real-world insurance quotes provided by major car insurance companies to shoppers across the U.S.

    What Affects Car Insurance Premiums

In addition to your driving record, age, location, and credit score, insurance premiums also depend on what kind of car you drive. Cars with proven crash avoidance features, such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), or good crash-test ratings tend to cost less to insure. By comparison, sports cars that tend to get into higher-speed crashes, luxury cars that cost a lot to fix, or vehicles that are more likely to be stolen tend to cost more to insure, he says.

“Cars with top safety scores and strong crash protection tend to see lower premiums because they’re less likely to produce major injury or damage claims,” says Matt Brannon, a data journalist at Insurify.

These safe, reliable, and satisfying vehicles—all CR Recommended—have the lowest insurance premiums.

How Insurify Calculated Car Insurance Premiums

Insurify looked at cars from the 2004 through 2024 model years. It sampled premiums for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with clean driving records and credit scores of 600 or higher, and quoted policies with bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident, property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000, and both comprehensive and collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible each.

While it might be tempting to buy a highly depreciated used luxury vehicle, insuring it may still cost more than a simpler, easier-to-fix mainstream model, says Brannon.

“If your vehicle is relatively cheap and gets totaled, it will cost your insurer less to replace it than a more expensive model,” he tells CR. “And because these models are widely driven, parts are easy to find and repairs cost less, which brings premiums down.”
