    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Toyota Sienna owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen goes blank

"Sporadically the display screen will go out or get very dim. The radio will be frozen in whatever it was doing when it was last functioning. Then it will randomly go back on. Years ago I believe I spoke with the dealership but its too expensive to explore to resolve. They havent been able to pinpoint. I suspect its short wiring because its not related to a fuse."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Screen for the gps display is impossible to read from drivers position."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The phone pairing system is basically unusable. You can't do anything except while parked, and the system routinely looses connection while driving (but then you can't reconnect until you park)."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Bluetooth failed completely, had to replace radio and all other parts."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Pairing difficulties started when it was new. However we were able to pair. As the Sienna got older it became more and more difficult."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)
    Voice control commands

"Voice control did not function just like Bluetooth failure."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

    Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Alignment

    "Front A-arms needed replaced"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Shocks or struts

"The right passenger front creeks and makes horrible sounds. We have taken it to two mechanics who thought they helped it, but havent. Our shocks deteriorated at an early stage of the car which we did not address. With the suspension gone every mechanic has told us its not worth fixing given the age and mileage of the vehicle. It still runs fine. We have also gone through multiple Batteries in the vehicle. Mechanics at Toyota or elsewhere have not been able to pinpoint, but I suspect its from the after-market DVD/player system the Princeton, NJ Toyota dealership installed when we purchased the vehicle new (we bought an LE and had the DVD player installed in our negotiations)."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"My understanding form the dealer is that it is not unusual for this to be wear out after 100000 miles."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Springs or torsion bars

    "Right rear spring was broken"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

"Backup lights quit working a few weeks ago. Have not resolved yet."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Other electrical system problem

"Despite taking vehicle to dealer four times to fix non-opening rear door, it still is a recurring problem. Dealer charges up to $185.00 just to try (without any fixing), and claims nothing is wrong (makes me feel hes questioning my veracity). And the inconvenience of malfunctioning remote control opening continues to exacerbate being severely handicapped."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Both sides started leaking grease within about 7000 miles"

Anonymous, WA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Driveshaft or axle

"Right axle shaft had to be replaced. I was able to drive without problem so it was serious enough to replace, but I probably could have kept driving on it for a little while before larger problems."

Anonymous, CT (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)

    "after 100000 I replaced axle evey 50000"

    What Owners Say

    Loose/rattling heat shield

"The heat shield right above the muffler fell off while we were in a gas station a couple of years ago. I looked at how to replace it. I will have to order the part and get the car up on jacks to do the work."

    Anonymous A., MI (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Other exhaust system problem

"In late December, 2023, the first problem I had occurred on I-95 in Brunswick, GA. The check engine light came on and I stopped at the I-95 Toyota dealer. They said the oil control valve needed to be replaced. They did this in 2-3 hours ($1,174) and I resumed my trip home. It is still working fine as of late April, 2024. The second problem occurred in early April, 2024. The gas cap cover malfunctioned (would not flip open from the inside control lever); took it to dealer for repair; they repaired it free of charge; works fine now."

"The rear hatch wont auto shut, it will go almost all the way down and then raise again. Its been doing this for a few years and seems to be an alignment problem"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Sunroof

"The sunroof broke while we were driving down the highway. It seemed to flare outward which was bizarre. If it would have just had a rock hit it I would have expected it to crack but not fully blow a hole."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Squeaks or rattles

"A few years ago, the rear stow away seats make noise anytime we go over uneven surfaces (potholes, speed bumps, high curbs, etc) This has only recently started. Also, the mechanism that let the stow away rear seats cover the gap when stowed, no longer works automatically. We have to flip it up or down manually. Neither problem has been resolved because of cost."

    POWER TRAIN
    Jul 08, 2014
If the transmission shift cable separates while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
    Summary:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2014 Sienna vehicles manufactured June 17, 2014, through June 24, 2014. The affected vehicles have a transmission shift control cable whose protective cable sleeve may have been damaged during assembly. This could cause the control cable to bind or separate during gear shift operation causing incorrect gear selection. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect."
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the transmission shift control cable, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in early August 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
