Road Test

Not only has it pioneered the genre, but the Toyota RAV4 has been one of the better compact SUVs, consistently among the top-ranked models in the class. But competition in the small-SUV class has never been stiffer, so to maintain its position the RAV4 underwent a refresh beginning with the 2016 model year which introduced a number of changes. It gained a quieter cabin, slightly retouched interior and exterior styling, and a kinder, gentler suspension for an improved ride. Also beginning with the 2016 model year, a hybrid version with an EPA combined fuel economy of 32 mpg was introduced.

2026

2026 Redesign Year

The redesigned Toyota RAV4 is offered strictly in hybrid and plug-in hybrid forms. It introduces new trim levels, and steps up its game for comfort, convenience, and safety. The hybrid powertrain produces 226 combined horsepower, and for the first time, it is available in a front-drive configuration. The AWD version has even more oomph, with 236 horsepower. The plug-in hybrid powertrain gained 18 horsepower for 2026, raising its combined output to 320 hp. All-wheel drive is standard. The electric-only range has increased from 42 miles to 50 miles. The PHEV is now available in four trims, adding the Woodland and GR Sport. All RAV4s have a 12.3-inch instrument panel that can display navigation guidance. The center infotainment screen is either a slim 10.5-inch screen or 12.9-inch screen with onscreen controls for the climate system. The RAV4 introduces Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, with the latest evolution of the brand’s comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance features.

2019-Present

Current Generation

Redesigned for 2019, the RAV4 Hybrid feels energetic, with the electric drive producing immediate and quiet motivation from a standstill, while delivering an impressive 37 mpg overall. The current generation's lower roof compromises interior space compared with the previous generation. The RAV4 is responsive in corners, and it remains under control even when pushed. The ride, however, is somewhat stiff, and the noisy engine hurts the driving experience. Most controls, such as the large climate knobs, are easy to use. FCW and AEB with pedestrian detection are standard. BSW and RCTW are standard on all except the base trim. For 2021 a plug-in hybrid version, called RAV4 Prime is offered. The Prime has 302 combined hp and AWD is standard. Toyota says it can travel about 42 miles on electric power. All 2023 models got an updated infotainment system, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Prime name for the plug-in hybrid model was dropped for 2025, replaced with the acronym, PHEV.

2016 Redesign Year

For years, the RAV4 has consistently been among the top-ranked small SUVs. Introduced in 2016, the RAV4 Hybrid has a quiet cabin, smooth ride, and a suite of advanced safety features. In our testing it returned a terrific 31 mpg overall. Handling is responsive and very secure. Inside, the controls are clear and intuitive. While the XLE comes with the automatic climate control and sunroof, you must step up to the Limited trim to get adjustable lumbar support and the more-comfortable faux-leather seats. Access is very easy, and the rear seat is roomy.
