    Polestar 1 First Drive

    Summary

    Introduction

Volvo's High-Performance Luxury Coupe Aims to Invade Tesla's Space

    A 600-horsepower plug-in hybrid

    Overview

Volvo's Polestar introduced a high-performance brand aimed at other high-end electrified or semi-electrified models from Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. The 600-horsepower Polestar 1 can drive 52 miles on batteries alone, according to the EPA. Like the Tesla Model S or new models coming from automakers including Audi and Mercedes, Polestar cars will combine their electric drives with lots of creature comforts, and a price tag of over $150,000. The car is said to have a continuously controlled electronic suspension and a double-electric rear axle, which Volvo says enables the car to transfer engine torque to the wheels individually. The 600 hp is combined with 737 lb.-ft. of torque. A carbon-fiber body was chosen to lower the car’s weight.

    Impressions

The Polestar 1 is a striking looking coupe with an impressive interior finish. The rear seat is super tight however, but could be used in a pinch or more comfortably accommodate a briefcase. Consumers can lay down orders for the Polestar 1 on line or buy it at select Volvo dealers. The car is built at a new factory in Chengdu, China.

The more mainstream Polestar 2 is Volvo's first pure EV. We tested it and found it very quick and nimble but a stiff ride, confusing controls and a tight interior should have potential buyers consider the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Volkswagen ID.4.
