Road Test

Although the design dates back to 2004, the Titan is a good choice among full-sized pickups, thanks to a powerful and smooth V8, relatively agile handling and a comfortably spacious cabin. A powered back window and damped tailgate are other nice touches. Payload capacity is commendable. In other respects, this version of the Titan is a bit behind the curve relative to newer competitors. Fuel economy remains a dismal 14 mpg, emergency handling doesn't shine, and a high step-up makes access a chore, especially for short people.

2017-2024

2017 Redesign Year

The redesigned 2017 Titan comes with a smooth and punchy gas 5.6-liter V8 that is mated to a slick and responsive seven-speed automatic transmission. A V6 engine is also available. The ride is more tolerable than the heavy-duty XD's, and handling is less clumsy. The roomy cabin has a variety of handy storage places, and the rear tailgate is damped--a nice touch. A suite of safety and driver-assistance features is offered, including Nissan's surround-view camera system, blind-spot warning, and moving-object detection. When properly equipped, the Titan tows 9,730 pounds. All 2019 models get a new 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. There’s also a new rear-door alert system to remind drivers to check the back seat after the vehicle is parked. A substantially refreshed Titan debuted for 2020. Updates included a nine-speed automatic that replaced the previous seven-speed, a 10-hp horsepower boost to 400 hp, for the 5.6-liter V8; an available 9-inch touch-screen infotainment system (a 7-inch screen is standard); and a host of standard safety features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic warning, and lane departure warning. 2024 is the final year for the Titan.

2004-2016

2004 Redesign Year

Nissan's first full-sized pickup, the Titan has an impressively large cabin, is relatively agile and offers a fairly comfortable ride, along with a very smooth transmission. From its 2004 introduction, safety features included optional electronic stability control and head-protection airbags. On the negative side, the crew cab's cargo bed is fairly small compared with the competition and payload capacity was a meager 1,105 pounds in our 2004 version. The payload was raised in later models. The muscular V8 provides strong acceleration, but the constant engine and exhaust noise can become tiresome. A 2008 freshening included styling updates and a long-bed version. The damped-action tailgate is a handy feature. Still, interior fit and finish are lackluster and neither a standard cab nor different engines are available.
