    First Take
Nissans flagship midsized sedan was redesigned and much improved for 2000. Its now among our top-rated family sedans. The Maximas ride is quiet though a little stiff, and its handling is secure. The SE model, with sporty pretensions, is stiffer. A powerful and refined 222-hp V6 provides impressive performance, though it requires premium fuel. The automatic shifts very smoothly, and the brakes work well. A spacious, airy cabin includes supportive front seats and roomy rear seating. Fit and finish are excellent, and reliability is one of the best in its class. A 227-hp 20th Anniversary Edition is available for 2001.
