    Mazda B-Series First Drive

    Introduction

In a class of few winners, the Mazda B-Series and similar Ford Ranger stand out by virtue of their all-around competence. Still, you won't forget you're in a truck. Handling is secure and fairly responsive, but the ride is stiff and choppy. The 3.0-liter V6 engine is pleasant enough and adequately powerful; an overhead-cam 4.0-liter V6 and a 2.3-liter four-cylinder are also available. All engines may now be ordered with a smooth-shifting five-speed automatic transmission. Extended-cab models offer four doors, but the rear seat is fit for cargo only. The thinly padded front seats are mounted too low. For a crew-cab version, consider the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The B-Series' reliability has fallen to below average.
