    First Take
Although they're not perfect, both the B-Series and similar Ford Ranger are still the best compact pickups on the market. Handling is good, but the ride is stiff and choppy. The 4.0-liter V6 performs adequately; the less powerful 3.0-liter version is smoother. The seats are low and thinly padded. As with all pickups, you can deactivate the passenger air bag when you install a child seat there. Four doors are available in extended-cab models, but save the rear seat for cargo. Reliability has improved to average for all models.
