    First Take
Ford's goal in designing the rear-wheel-drive LS was to close a gaping hole in its passenger-car lineup. And since the LS shares its platform with the Jaguar S-Type, it meets that goal handily. The standard V6 is smooth though not very powerful. The automatic transmission suits this engine well, however. Those who opt for the V6 can also choose a manual transmission. The V8 is quiet and muscular, and comes with an automatic that can be shifted manually. Handling is agile, and the ride is comfortable. Road noise is a bit high, however. Storage space in the cabin is very sparse.
