    First Take
This competent rear-wheel-drive model lacks the overall dynamic prowess of the BMW 528i and Mercedes-Benz E320. A smooth, powerful 3.0-liter Six and five-speed automatic transmission are the GS300's best features. The ride isn't as supple as that of competing Audis, BMWs, and Mercedes-Benzs, however, but the interior is extremely quiet. Handling is competent but unexceptional. The brakes are excellent. An electronic stability-control system effectively prevents sideward skids, though it takes too long to kick in on snow and ice. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, the rear seat is just adequate. A muscular 4.0-liter V8 powers the GS400 version.
