    First Take
This small SUV has independent suspension and all-wheel drive. With traction control and an effective hill-descent system, it's one of the few unibody SUV's capable of tackling on- and off-road duties with equal aplomb. Ride and handling are quite good, and the brakes are strong. The seats are comfortable, and the rear is roomy. When we tested it in 2002, we found many controls were awkward and confusing. The V6 is neither energetic nor fuel-efficient. The automatic didn't shift smoothly. Interior quality was unimpressive, and the air conditioning was marginal. A recent freshening has addressed some of those flaws. Reliability has been poor.
