    First Take
A new and overdue addition to the Jaguar line, the recently introduced S-Type enables Jaguar to compete more effectively against the likes of the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Lexus GS, and Audi A6. This new Jag shares its basic rear-wheel-drive platform with the new Lincoln LS and the forthcoming Ford Thunderbird. It's smaller and cheaper than the XJ8, and it's available with a 3.0-liter V6 or a 4.0-liter V8. Among its alluring technical gadgets is a system that lets you adjust the climate, audio, and cell-phone systems using voice commands alone. Options include an in-dash satellite navigation system, an audible obstacle-sensor in the rear bumper that aids in parking, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
