    Dodge Durango Road Test

    Introduction

This version of Durango is a wholly different animal from the body-on-frame truck derivative it replaced. Now it's based on the redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee, a descendant of the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class.

This Durango rides well and the spacious cabin is comfortable, quiet, and well appointed. Occupying the large end of the mid-sized SUV spectrum, the Durango has a third-row seat that's actually usable. Cargo and trailer-towing capacities are generous as well.

The Hemi V8 version provides muscular acceleration, but a distinctly mediocre 14 mpg. The V6 alternative is smooth, refined, and more economical (17 mpg) but feels a bit sluggish at times. Handling is relatively responsive and ultimately secure, but there is just no hiding the Durango's considerable bulk.
