    First Take
The XLR gives Cadillac an entry in the exclusive luxury convertible niche that includes the Mercedes SL and Jaguar XK8. The XLR is based on the Corvette, but unlike the Corvette it is powered by a sophisticated, smooth Northstar V8 mated to a five-speed automatic. The metal roof is power retractable -- a neat process that's achieved by a press of a button and takes about 30 seconds, similar to the one that was pioneered by Mercedes in the SLK. The interior is more luxuriously appointed than that of a Corvette. The XLR is quick and handles quite well but doesn't feel as sporty to drive as an SL500 or a Porsche 911 convertible. And unlike the Jaguar, it does not offer a small rear seat -- the XLR is strictly a two-seater.
