Best Cars That Earn Tax Credits and May Avoid Tariffs

Legislation has put a new emphasis on buying American, with tariffs threatening to raise prices on imported vehicles and tax credits incentivizing models built in the U.S. For shoppers simply looking for a good, safe, reliable car, this adds fresh complications—and potential savings.

The easiest way to make a smart purchase is to shop from our annual Top Picks list. These are 10 standout models from among 260 tested vehicles in our ratings, each shining for their combined road test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety.

With this new perspective, we find that four of the 2025 Top Picks are built in the U.S.: BMW X5, Tesla Model Y, Toyota Camry, and Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The other six are imported and may be subject to tariffs. Of course, how each automaker will address tariffs may vary. It is possible they will spread the tariff costs across their model range, limiting the direct effect on each model. Even still, buyers will be ineligible to deduct up to $10,000 in loan interest on financed, imported models. This offer is for any new vehicle purchased after Jan. 1, 2025, that is built in the U.S. This deduction is considered to be “above the line,” meaning it is used in addition to the standard deduction. Bear in mind that this tax credit will be phased out after 2028—possibly before the loan is paid off.

Top Picks built in Japan, based on our window stickers: Lexus NX, Subaru Crosstrek, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4 PHEV. The Ford Maverick and Nissan Sentra we tested were built in Mexico.

For CR members looking to buy among the very best cars, SUVs, and trucks, our experts have identified high-scoring, American-made alternatives to those six imported models, each carrying a coveted CR recommendation.

These picks, along with ratings, pricing, and more information, are available to CR members. Three picks have versions that may be imported, and we indicate them in the ratings boxes below.

You can find the assembly location for any car by looking at the window sticker or the sticker in the driver’s doorjamb. The vehicle identification number (VIN) can be decoded for this information—a helpful trick when checking dealership inventory online. (Learn how to decode a VIN.)
