The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

    What Owners Say

    Electric/hybrid battery pack cooling problem

"The check engine light came on, so I took it to the dealer. It took them a week to diagnose the problem, flush the battery coolant system and refill and test the system."

    Anonymous A., CA (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Electric/hybrid battery pack malfunction (didn't need replacement)

"The temperature sensor went back a month after buying the car. It also had an issue at month 6 for an issue with the high capacity shutoff valve."

    Anonymous, TN (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Other electric/hybrid battery problem

"The car wouldn't start when they shipped it from Germany (we were living in Germany - but the car is US specs). Had to pay $680 out of pocket for the shipping agency to get it repaired before shipping it to the states."

    Anonymous, SC (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"The vehicle has been with the BMW dealer for a total of 9 weeks since I purchased it. BMW of N.A. is unwilling to offer any assistance. I have been driving a loaner during this time and understand the problem is not with the dealership but with the factory and that these problems are rampant in X5 hybrids."

    Anonymous A., NY (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Other major engine problem

"I was driving on the freeway when the engine started to slow down. I got a warning on the infotainment system that there was a major problem with the gas engine. I tried switching to the gas engine mode (sport) but it said there was no fuel available (I had a full tank of gas). I costed to the side of the road, turned the car off and restarted in Sport mode. It drove fine, but the warning was still there. Took it to the dealer the next morning, and it took a week to diagnose that the Valvetronic Controller (a system that adjusts valve lift and duration) had failed. The dealer replaced the part and road tested it to make sure that the problem was fixed."

    Anonymous A., CA (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Other in-car electronics problem

"touch screen blanked several times. Nothing found and screen returned. Then went out and nothing returned. Still could drive car. Took to dealer. They could not diagnose and had to call BMW. The software was reloaded. Still did not work correctly. Finally had to get BMW approval to replace. Done and no further problems. Did not have car for about 10 days."

    Anonymous, AZ (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Recurring lack of connectivity until software updates resolved it"

    Anonymous, SC (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control.

    What Owners Say

    Other driveline problem

"turbocharger was replaced. Engine trouble symbol appeared"

    Anonymous A., NJ (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

    What Owners Say

    Other electric/hybrid charging problem

"Check engine light came on, dealer said it was due to battery cooling system issue. Kept car for more than a week (dealer service dept is terrible overall)"

    Anonymous, IA (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    Other climate system problem

"3 weeks after getting x5 the check engine light came on. Remote diagnosis indicated a failed solenoid valve controlling cooling to battery. Took it to dealership had to get part from Germany. Gabe is a loaner. 3 weeks later replaced solenoid picked up x5. About 2 weeks after that check engine light on again, same issue. This time service had instructions from BMW engineering to flush cooling and blow out lines. Apparently there was plastic debris in lines from manufacturing that would clog solenoid valve. After second repair that took another week car has been perfect. bmw credited is 1 month of payment or about $900"

    Anonymous, PA (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Engine knock or ping

"The vehicle ran very rough and I took it to the dealership 4 times and each of the first 3 times they downloaded new software and it didn't fix the problem. The 4th time the dealer (a different one) has found the issue with vehicles on board computer which had to be replaced."

    Anonymous A., NY (2024 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Electric Motor

Electric drive failure, replacement or malfunction.

    What Owners Say

Electric drive motor malfunction (didn't need replacement)

"The stopped charging and would not start. drivetrain malfunction. It was in repair for 6 weeks. As I understand it, the BMW dealership in coordination with BMW NA could not figure out what was wrong so they just ended up replacing most of the sensor, the electrical brain and other parts and pieces to put it back together again. Im not sure I trust the car anymore, so we may sell if BMW does not buy it back. Im also concerned about deminished value of the car because of it."
